My name is Marilyn Sunderland. I was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri but have lived in Riverton, Utah for over 30 years. Art has always been a part of my life. I have painted portraits, landscapes, and various other subjects with oils, acrylics, and pen/ink mediums. I have worked with clay sculpturing, clay ceramics and glass engravings.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Art from the University of Missouri , and completed a 2 year art course from the Art Instructions Inc. of Minneapolis . I have acquired carving certificates for classes completed in gourd and creative wood carving.
I have won award and ribbons and Best of Shows on my gourd carvings from shows such as the Utah Valley Wood Sculpture Show, the Wood Carvers Show & Competition, Art Festivals, and the Utah State Fair. About 4 years ago, when I purchased my ultra high speed engraving/carving tool, it changed my life. I love the relief effects I get when carving on gourds and being able to use other mediums to enhance each piece, make’s it even better. The gourd has become my canvas to create my art.
I presented a carved gourd to Senator Orrin Hatch and with the help of his staff; one of my gourds was delivered to The President and Mrs. George W. Bush at the White House.
I am happy to say I am now an artist for the Trail of Painted Ponies and have a pony figurine that was released this winter 2013 called ‘Freedom Reigns’ with my design on it.
